The corpse of one of the missing policemen involved in a gun battle between with suspected Fulani herdsmen has been recovered in a river near Ohoror community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
A crack team of the police from Ughelli Area Command and suspected herdsmen were engaged in a gun duel on Sunday
Sources told Punch newspaper that the body of the policeman was found in a river by local divers assisting policemen in the area to search for the missing policemen on Tuesday.
The whereabouts of the other officer remained unknown.
The AK-47 rifle-wielding herdsmen had engaged the police team led by a Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ughelli Area Command and other senior police officers in a gun battle injuring several persons including the commander.
The police team had visited the herdsmen’s hideout in a bid to resolve the incessant clashes between them, local farmers and the host community.
A source who identified the deceased as Johnson Ehiamene, noted that he may have fled into the river during the exchange of fire between them and the herdsmen.
The source added that the corpse had already been deposited at the Ughelli Central Hospital Morgue.
An official of the hospital also confirmed receiving the corpse of the officer but noted that no gun injuries were seen on his body.
Sunday’s clash made it the second time policemen were clashing with arms-wielding herdsmen in the area. The first attack on a police team occurred on January 23, 2017.
