“I Have Some Players In My Squad I Don’t Need” – Chelsea Coach, Sarri Says After Defeat To Leicester City

Maurizio Sarri says his attentions turned to Chelsea’s Boxing Day match with Watford immediately after defeat to Leicester at the weekend.

The Blues have a hectic schedule coming up with a trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday following the game at Vicarage Road, then a home Premier League tie against Southampton on 2 January coming not long before the visit of Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.

Sarri has spoken of his disappointment at the reaction of his players after going a goal behind against the Foxes, having controlled much of the game before Jamie Vardy’s strike, but he knows there is no time to dwell on the defeat.

‘I started to think to the next match within an hour,’ he explained. ‘I am not able to do anything else when we have lost a match like this.’

Sarri also said he does not put the surprise defeat at the weekend down to physical fatigue, adding:

‘I don’t think so, because we haven’t got players who have played lots of minutes. We have players with lots of minutes in the Premier League, but not in the whole season.

‘In this game we were very good for 55 minutes, and then after the goal we were in trouble. I think there is another reason and it’s not a physical thing.’

Discussing the make-up of his squad, Sarri believes some streamlining is required.

‘I think at the moment we have too many players,’ he said. ‘We have 28 players and it is impossible to use all of them. I think 25 is the right number. We have a lot of offensive midfielders and we have only Kante as a defensive midfielder. It is not easy to have the right balance in our midfield.’
