Senator Dino Melaye has defeated Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to retain his Kogi west senatorial seat.
Melaye retained his seat after defeating Adeyemi by almost 20,000 votes.
The result was announced in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi in the early hours of Monday by the rerurning officer of the election, Emmanuel Bala.
Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 85, 395 votes while Adeyemi had 66, 901 votes.
Although he won the 2015 election under the APC, Melaye defected to the PDP following a crisis with the leadership of the ruling party.
