The RFEF’s Competition Committee have hit Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa with an eight-match ban for his behaviour towards a refree, Gil Manzano in Atletico Madrid’s defeat to Barcelona.
Four of the matches are for his insults, while the other four are for grabbing the official’s arm after he had been shown the red card.
Additionally, both the player and Atletico have been fined. Costa will have to pay 6,010 euros while Atleti will pay 2,800 euros.
According to Manzano’s report, the forward threatened him by saying “I s*** on your wh*** mother, “I s*** on your wh*** mother.
“Once expelled, staying on the pitch, he grabbed me by the arm in order to prevent me from showing cards to his teammates, No.24 and No.2, respectively.”
Costa and the club had fought against the punishment, with the player insisting that he had said “I s*** on my mother”, but the Committee have consulted Manzano for clarification and reached their decision.
Atletico are entitled to appeal against the ban.
