President Muhammadu Buhari has renamed the national stadium in Abuja after MKO Abiola.

Buhari, while giving his democracy day speech, revealed that the Abuja National Stadium would now be called the Moshood Abiola Stadium to honour the late Moshood Abiola

Buhari surprised everyone gathered at the Eagles Square in Abuja to celebrate Democracy day as he made the announcement while rounding up his speech.

The announcement was met with loud cheers by those present in the square.

You’ll recall that Buhari has also declared June 12 a public holiday and a day to celebrate Democracy in Nigeria.

MKO Abiola was the winner of the June 12, 1993 election, which is adjudged to be the freest and fairest election ever held in Nigeria.

Abiola was however denied the opportunity to rule Nigeria as the military government of Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) denied Abiola his chance to be President
