A former Minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has apologized for his outburst in which he used the word “stupid’ against a journalist in Calabar.
During a press briefing in Calabar, the journalist in question, who works with Daily Trust newspaper, asked a question that infuriated Fani-Kayode.
The former Minister then fired at the journalist:
“What type of stupid question is that? What type of stupid question is that? Bankrolling who? Do you know who you’re talking to? I’ll not take any question from this man.”
“…Go and report yourself to your publisher…I could see from your face, before you got here, how stupid you are.”
During my tour of the South and after a long and successful press conference in Calabar, Cross Rivers state, a journalist put up his hand for the last question and said,
“Well we do not know who is bankrolling you”.
This is not a question but an assertion and an insult…1/4 pic.twitter.com/uWImIknjN3

Fani-Kayode has now apologized for the outburst, saying that he has many friends in the media and would never look to undermine the profession.
“I met with my advisors & I wish to say the following. I hereby withdraw the word “stupid” which I used in my encounter with a journalist in Calabar,” Fani-Kayode said.
“I have many friends in the media who I offended by losing my cool & using such words. I hereby express my regrets for doing so.
Fani-Kayode also denied reports that he threatened to harm the journalist for the question.
“I do however wish to state categorically that no threat of physical harm was ever made to the journalist in question and neither did I send anyone to threaten him.
“Anyone that says otherwise is lying and I challenge them to bring the proof.
I would never seek to physically harm a journalist. For the last 30 years I have defended & worked with journalists & fought for the right of freedom of exiression (sic).
“I am also very close to many in that profession. I would be the last to seek to disparage those that are honorable and noble within its ranks.
“I hope that this will assuage the pain and anger of anyone that was hurt or offended by this ugly episode. I have now put this matter behind me and moved on. Now my tour of the South continues.
“Moving to another state today!
